Chief of Fire Prevention
Patricia Dyas
The Shreveport Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division is under the direction of the Chief of Fire Prevention, Chief Patricia Dyas.
Chief Patricia Dyas is native of Shreveport, Louisiana. She was born and raised in the Stoner Hill Community. She is the mother of four children. Chief Dyas is the daughter of the late Mrs. Martile Jefferson and Mr. Henry Jefferson Jr.
Chief Dyas has 30 years of experience with the Shreveport Fire Department. She began her career in 1981, after being honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1980. Chief Dyas has been instrumental in the professional growth and commitment to the citizens of Shreveport. During her career in the Fire Service, she has pledged to provide unsurpassable services to the citizens of Shreveport as member of many community service organizations, in addition to the time-honored services that firefighters generally provide. Chief Dyas has served in many capacities that affect not only the state of Louisiana, but her leadership has also had a national significance.
Chief Dyas started her career as a firefighter, stationed at Fire Station No. 4. She was promoted to Fire Inspector on November 1, 1986. From 1986 to 1999, Chief Dyas served in the following capacities: Public Education, Inspection, and the Investigative Section. On October 1, 1999, she was promoted to Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention as the Chief of Public Education. On August 2, 2011 she was further promoted to her present position as Chief of Fire Prevention.
Chief Dyas graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1971. In 1976 she earned a Bachelors Degree from Southern University. She continued her education by graduating in 2003 from Louisiana State University - Eunice with a Fire Science Degree. She later graduated in 2004 from Southern University Shreveport with a Safety and Hazardous Material Technology Degree, and from Central Michigan University with a Masters Degree. Most recently, Chief Dyas graduated from Southern University - Shreveport in 2010 with a Certificate in Fire Service Management.
Chief Patricia Dyas is member of the International Associate of Fire Chiefs, a member of the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association, and a member of the Women in the Fire Service, and the Alumni of the National Fire Academy.
Chief Dyas states that “her trust in the Lord, and her unyielding resilience in public service, coupled with her determination to offer excellent service to the Shreveport Fire Department and the citizens of Shreveport qualifies her to continue to provide the level of service required of her in this position.”

About Fire Prevention
The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for the prevention of injuries to persons and losses to property that are caused by fire and other emergencies.
In 2008, the Fire Prevention Division's Public Education Section presented 215 fire safety programs to 14,661 attendees. The division provided 12,122 copies of fire safety literature to citizens; conducted 10 fire drills that included recommendations toward fire and life safety; and provided 397 free smoke detectors for installation in area homes. In addition, with federal funds of over $60,000 secured by the Public Education Section, the Shreveport Fire Department was able to purchase much needed equipment which has assisted with educating second grade students at the Sheriff's Safety Town.
The Inspections Section performed 6,757 existing commercial building inspections; conducted 1,281 new construction inspections at different stages of construction; performed 489 plan reviews; reviewed and approved 83 applications for permits as required by ordinance for different activities during the past year.
The Investigations Section investigated 353 fires in 2008 of which over 50 percent were determined to be incendiary (arson) fires. Investigators made 11 arrests for arson crimes. The bomb squad responded to 18 bomb threats and investigated 13 suspicious items as potential improvised explosive devices in 2008.
