The drivers of a pickup
and a Shreveport Fire Department pumper
truck both said they did not see each
other before a collision Monday evening
that killed a passenger in the pickup, a
Fire Department spokesman said today.
Gary Cooper, 48, of Oil City was
killed when the pickup crashed into the
fire truck as the pumper was headed to a
grass fire in North Highlands
subdivision in north Shreveport.
The accident happened at North Market
Street and Lincoln Drive.
Police said the driver of the fire
truck had the lights and siren on when
the pickup crashed into it. Fire
Department spokesman Brian Crawford said
vehicles on North Market had slowed to
let the fire truck make a left turn into
the subdivision. The pickup topped the
hill and crashed into the side of the
34,000-pound fire truck, Crawford said.
Cooper is believed to have died
en-route to the hospital. Three
firefighters aboard the engine, which
was from Fire Station 2 on North Market
Street, were not injured. A 16-year-old
riding in the back seat of the pickup
was slightly injured and the driver of
the pickup, Ronald Osborne, was walking
around after the accident; both were
taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the fire truck, Greg
Tyndall, underwent a routine drug test,
Crawford said.
