The Shreveport Fire Department

     
 

An Engine (Pumper)
is a fire truck which carries hose, water supply, ground ladders, other miscellaneous fire and emergency medical equipment.  It has a pump that boost the water pressure to the deck pipes or hose that firefighters use to fight the fire.  The engine is manned by a captain, a driver and two firefighters who are EMTs or Paramedics. Shreveport has 22 Engine Companies in active service.
 

 
     
 

A Truck (Hook and Ladder) 
is a  fire truck which carries a long telescoping aerial ladder.  Some ladder trucks carry a 75 foot aerial ladder, while others carry 100 to 107 foot aerial ladders.  They also carry several other ground ladders that can be extended to different heights.  The aerial ladder also has a pre-connected water nozzle attached to the top end of the aerial ladder.  These trucks carry salvage and miscellaneous equipment and are manned by a captain and a driver.  Shreveport has 7 Hook and Ladder Truck Companies..

 
     
 

A Rescue Unit
is a special fire truck which carries four firefighters and specialized equipment for firefighting and for such things as extracting people from car wrecks,  The firefighters on this rig are specially trained for special rescuing people trapped in fires, building collapses or car wrecks, etc.  They are also trained to handle hazardous material spills and water rescues.   This truck is manned by a captain, a driver and two firefighters.  They are all EMT's or paramedics. The S.F.D. has 2 Rescue Units.

 
     
 

A Medic Unit
is an ambulance with medical equipment to treat most medical emergencies and stretchers to carry injured or sick people to hospitals.  They are manned by two firefighters which are paramedics.  There are 10 Medic Units in active service..

 
     
 

A Charlie Truck 
is an aircraft fire rescue truck which carries large quantities of water and foam.  It has remote controlled high pressure nozzles, hoses and special tools for performing aircraft rescue . It is manned by a captain and a driver.  There are 3 Charlie Trucks in active service..

 
     
 

A SPRINT Car

is manned by a paramedic fire captain, and the driver of the hook and ladder truck in the station. When there is an emergency medical call in the SPRINT Car’s district the truck company will go out of service while the car makes the call. When the SPRINT Car returns to the station the Truck Company will be placed back in service. If a fire call for the truck company comes in while the SPRINT Car is on a run, the next nearest truck company will respond to the fire.

 
     
 

A Battalion Chief
is the chief officer in command of a particular fire district in the city.  He is in charge of the firefighters at the stations in his battalion's district. He responds to all fires and special calls in his district or to any district in the city when he is directed to do so.  His driver is a captain who is the safety officer for any incident that the district chief is assigned.  In Shreveport the Battalion Chiefs use Dodge Trucks.  Shreveport has 6 Battalion Chiefs.

 
     
 

EMS Supervisors 
S.F.D. officers in charge of medic units and unusual or difficult medical emergency calls.  The vehicles they use are Dodge Trucks. There are two EMS Supervisors on duty per shift.

 
     
 

Shift Commander
is an Assistant Fire Chief in charge of all fire suppression and emergency operations in the city.  The Shift Commander responds to emergencies in a Ford Crown Victoria.
